James, whose Miami Heat have won back-to-back NBA titles, has been a top topic for all things ESPN since he entered the league as a highly-touted teen back in 2003. ESPNs web site even has an entire tab dedicated to the Heat team known simply as the Heat Index . James has been the most discussed and dissected athlete over the past decade, so his spot atop SportsCenters most mentioned list is not a surprise. The study, which spanned over a years worth of SportsCenter and calculated total mentions per player, demonstrated that ESPN may focus slightly more on some sports and its athletes than others. Out of the 12 top most mentioned athletes, eight were NBA players, three were NFL quarterbacks, and one, Tiger Woods, is a professional golfer. Players from the NHL and MLB were noticeably absent.

During that time, it was hard to be a LeBron James fan. He was constantly being criticized for his lack of clutch play in the fourth quarter and even his hairline. You know little kids these days; we all know that guy that becomes a fan of a team the day after they win the Super Bowl. For a while there, people were jumping on the LeBron hatebandwagon, just watching his games to root against him, or not even watching them at all. LeBrons popularity and credibility took a huge hit in the 2011 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks . He disappeared in that series, especially in the fourth quarter. LeBron James you got change for a dollar jokes and everything related to that took over social media. Some questioned if he was ever going to win an NBA Finals ring. We laugh at that today, but for a while it was a reality. He took his talents to South Beach to win not one, not two, not three, and after two seasons he didnt even have one.

For his final season in Cleveland, 15.6 percent of fans called him their favorite, according to the ESPN Sports Poll taken after the 2009-10 season. But for his first two years with the Heat, James was called fans’ favorite player by 10.2 and 9.4 percent, respectively. But James became easier to love, thanks in part to his play on the court, which led to two titles and two Finals MVP awards.

Coach Tom Thibodeau was angry the Heat attempted five more free throws (30-25) than his Bulls. He had plenty to be frustrated about, but the free throws should not have been at the top of the list. Anyone in his position couldn’t help but wonder where his team might have stood if Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng — and never mind Derrick Rose — had been available. The Bulls have been stubbornly triumphant in their refusal to give up when no one has given them a reasonable chance of stealing more than a couple of games against the defending champs. Throughout the game’s midsection they had been tongue-tied, and it started in the final minute of the tight opening quarter when Nate Robinson (17 points, seven assists) had been knocked down on a hard foul while driving at Chris Andersen . Andersen was beginning to sit up when Joakim Noah came running over to shove him away, earning a technical foul before a horde of both teams and referees arrived. Three minutes later James was dribbling across half court when backup Bulls center Nazr Mohammed lunged from the right to wrap both arms around him like Brian Urlacher.
